Elmhurst Protein Shake Review

I’ve been weightlifting for about three years now. In that time, I have also learned a lot about how my body responds to food while lifting.
For example, I generally always lifted fasted. Eating right before lifting just makes me feel sick. My workouts feel more sluggish and I just generally don’t have a good workout day when I do that.
I also generally don’t really eat food in the morning when I workout before work. If I do eat something, it’s usually a snack like thing at my desk around 10 am. I know this is dumb. Lifting and then consuming no protein until almost 6 hours after your lift is pretty much counter-productive.
Protein shakes are the obvious answer here and I’ve tried a lot of them…everything from the powdered whey variety to boxed low-carb muscle milk type things. None of them worked for me. They either had too much sugar, tasted terrible or gave me terrible stomach cramps.
After a while, I just gave up on them entirely.
To try and supplement my protein needs, I started putting Collagen Peptides in my morning matcha lattes. And I still do that, but I never felt like I was getting enough quick and easy protein from that.
Again…before you tell me to just eat real food in the morning, I have tried. I really have. It just never sits well with my stomach and honestly, I focus better at work if I don’t eat a huge meal in the morning.
I had basically given up all hope entirely on finding a viable protein shake option for me but then I saw an Instagram post from Elmhurst.
Elmhurst is the company that I get my Cashew Milk from. They whole thing is that they make a nut milk without any of the weird thickeners or added nonsense that the other companies do. And let me tell you, it is delicious.
Needless to say I was super excited when I saw Elmhurst’s Instagram post announcing that they were dropping their new Chocolate Peanut Protein Shake. I went to their website and looked it up.
Billed as The Cleanest Protein Shake on the Planet” Elmhurst’s Chocolate Peanut Protein Shake has literally 6 ingredients: water, peanuts, can sugar, Dutch processed cocoa, natural flavors, and salt. That’s it.
I bought a four pack ($15.96 for 4). Not cheap, I know. But I was willing to spend the upfront money to see if this would work for me and that’s only $3.99 a carton which honestly isn’t bad.
I’ve since had two of the cartons and I am so happy with them. The taste was a little surprising at first. Very peanuty and not super chocolaty. If you are used to the high sugar protein drinks, these might jar you a bit, but honestly, it was overall super tasty.
Better yet, absolutely no stomachache, headache or any of the other negative side effects that I’ve gotten with other protein shakes.
If you have been looking for a protein option but are either sensitive to whey or just don’t like the artificial sweeteners in other shakes, I highly recommend trying these. Elmhurst is a great company and they really know what they are doing. I’m excited to see the protein shake line potentially expand and look forward to what they do next!
